Freedom T-1, crocodile sex and gold DOES grow on trees after all

Hello there! Apologies for the last two days of silence - I was buried eyeballs deep in the #biodata annual workshop/conference, which I helped wrangle this year. Stay tuned for news on that... Anyhoo, moving straight along!

Remember Dancers Among Us, which showed dancers doing 'normal' stuff? Well, the photographer responsible is back, and this time doing it with athletes (hur).

Climate change increased the number of deaths

It's not going to get any better, unless we stop letting the denialist nutters make the choices and run the show.

Australia: 'the lucky country'*

My Arm:the Comic

Guy tattoos four blank panels on his arm. Guy makes new strip on arm each day.

I think I like the concept more than the actual strips, but I could still be convinced. Also, now _i_ want blank panels on my arm, too!

Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed

Most of us treat our money this way. The more we make, the more we spend. It’s not that we suddenly need to buy more just because we make more, only that we can, so we do. In fact, it’s quite difficult for us to avoid increasing our standard of living (or at least our rate of spending) every time we get a raise.

Some interesting thoughts on things such as the 40 hour work week. As someone staring (happily) down the barrel of no money BUT less misery, it certainly rang some bells (I'm also very happily spendy (mostly in terms of buying other people drinks) when I'm in the money - something that now needs to stop :P).

I thoroughly recommend the acclaimed documentary series The Century of the Self, on this note...

The bright side of sadness

Bad moods can have upsides. Ask anyone who's experienced them and has also noticed the effects of such moods on certain cognitive tasks and so forth. In short? Constant happiness may not be all we currently crack it up to be (man, do I relate to that...).

List of Reasons for Admission to an Insane Asylum From the Late 1800s

As one of my friends put it: asylums would have been full of really interesting women (and men too, of course) :P And on that note...

The World’s Google Searches Reveal Our Secret Horrible Attitude Toward Women

I don't know about 'secret', but yes, hopefully this article will help even more people understand some of the very, very ugly attitudes which are so terrifyingly prevalent, EVEN IN WESTERN SOCIETY.

Honourable mention

How crocodiles have sex

Because you know you wanted to know :P Whether or not some of those images are NSFW or not is up to you and your employer, I guess...

Googly eyes

One of the more charming things I've seen recently. Featuring googly eyes, Conan, Andy and Seth. Now, to go get me some!

This has to be seen to be believed.

And finally...

Memo(rable) Akten

I saw Memo Akten, self-professed 'professional tweaker' (he tweaks NUMBERS, people, NUMBERS) speak at Semi-Permanent over the weekend. Wow. Just...wow. Have a look at ALL his things, including the nommy Depeche Mode music video.

Note - he open sources his code, and says that "not sharing tech is selfish, unethical, unsustainable & detrimental to the development of humanity".

I am so the impress. (Yes, those are, in fact, drones being used in the video below)
